OUR HISTORY

The Atenea Quartet, born in 2019 in Barcelona, is positioned as one of the most relevant quartets of its generation. The quartet has garnered awards such as the Prix Jeunes Solistes Credit Suisse 2023, being the first quartet to obtain this distinction, and El Primer Palau 2022 (First Prize, Critics' Prize, JJMM Spain Extraordinary Prize, audience and Catalunya Music Award).

In its brief yet impactful career, the ensemble has been invited to perform throughout Europe in venues and festivals such as the Lucerne Festival, the Barcelona String Quartet Biennial, the Vilabertran Schubertíada, the Musikdorf Ernen Festival, the Kulturfest Resonanzen Sils, the Wissembourg International Music Festival, the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and the Juan March Foundation, among others.

Currently, the ensemble continues its musical training at the Hochschule für Musik FHNW in Basel, under the advice of Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet), Silvia Simionescu (Gringolts Quartet), Claudio Martínez Mehner, Anton Kernjak and Anna Gebert. Previously, they studied with the Casals Quartet, during his time in Barcelona.

In addition, the ensemble has participated in renowned academies and masterclasses such as the Prussia Cove International Seminar (Claus-Christian Schuster), the Swiss Chamber Academy (Heinz Holliger), Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland's International Chamber Music Campus (Donald Weilerstein) and Festival Aix-En-Provence (Quatuor Diotima).

     Story

Throughout his young career he has won significant awards such as the Prix Jeunes Solistes Credit Suisse 2023, being the first quartet to obtain this distinction, and El Primer Palau 2022 (First Prize, Critics' Prize, JJMM Spain Extraordinary Prize, audience and Catalunya Music Award).

Despite its youth, the ensemble has been invited to perform throughout Europe in venues and festivals such as the Lucerne Festival, the Barcelona String Quartet Biennial, the Vilabertran Schubertíada, the Musikdorf Ernen Festival, the Kulturfest Resonanzen Sils, the Wissembourg International Music Festival, the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence and the Juan March Foundation, among others.

  • Gil Sisquella Oncins is a founding member of the Atenea Quartet and a prominent Catalan violinist.

     

    Gil has performed at numerous chamber music festivals, including the Resonanzen Sils Kulturfest in Switzerland, Musikdorf Ernen in Switzerland, and Schubertíada Vilabertran in Spain. He has also collaborated with other prominent musicians such as Patricia Kopatchinskaja and members of the Camerata Bern on the Salzburger Festspiele project "Dies Irae".

     

    Since 2021, Gil has been a regular guest of the Haydn Philharmonie and has performed at festivals such as Bremen Musikfest and Herbstgold Festival in Eisenstadt (Austria), sharing the stage with renowned musicians such as Enrico Onofri, Nicolas Altstaedt, Barnabás Kelemen, Fazil Say and Julian Rachlin.

  • Jaume Angelès Fité is a Catalan violinist and violist born in Barcelona in 1996. He began his music studies at ESMUC and later obtained his Master's Degree in Violin Performance at the same institution. She also completed her Master's in Viola Performance at the Hochschule für Musik FHNW Basel with teachers Silvia Simionescu and Rainer Schmidt.

     

    During his career, Jaume has won several prizes in chamber music competitions, including First Prize at the 2021 Orpheus Swiss Chamber Music Competition with the Athena Quartet, as well as a scholarship awarded by the Rahn Kulturfonds in 2021. He has also performed at prestigious festivals such as the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the Musikdorf Ernen Festival, the Schubertíada de Vilabertran

    and the Philharmonie de Paris.

     

    In addition to his work with the Atenea Quartet, Jaume has participated in various academies and festivals as a violin and viola soloist, including the Pau Casals Festival, the Geneva International String Academy and the IMS Prussia Cove Masterclasses.

     

    During the 2021-2022 season, Jaume has collaborated as Second Violin leader with the Sinfonietta Basel Orchestra and has been selected as Viola Academist for the Kammerorchester Basel during the 2022-2023 season.

  • Bernat Santacana is a Catalan musician who was born in Barcelona in 1998. From a very young age, he began studying violin with Professor Núria Rotllan and later graduated in Violin Performance at the Escuela Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMuC). During her career, she also earned a viola degree with Jonathan Brown and completed her Master's in Viola Performance at the Hochschule für Musik Basel under the tutelage of Professor Silvia Simionescu.

    Bernat has participated in several young and professional orchestras, but his main musical activity is focused on chamber music. He is a founding member of the Athena Quartet, a group with which he has performed throughout Europe. His skill and ability as a musician have led him to play on the most prestigious stages in Spain, such as the Auditori de Barcelona and the Palau de la Música Catalana, as well as other venues such as the Philarmonie de Paris, the Swiss Chamber Music Festival, the Delta Chamber Music Festival and the Schubertíada de Vilabertran.

  • Iago Domínguez is a Galician cellist born in Santiago de Compostela in 1995. He began his music studies at the age of five at the Santiago de Compostela Professional Conservatory of Music and later with Professor Bárbara Switalska. Starting in 2014, he studied with Ivan Monighetti and Sol Gabetta at the prestigious Hochschule für Musik Basel for his bachelor's degree. He continued his master's studies with Danjulo Ishizaka.

     

    Iago has won several prizes in international competitions, including the Soncello Competition in Spain and the Studiumpreis Migros Kulturprozent in Switzerland. He has performed as a soloist with renowned orchestras such as the Gstaad Festival Orchestra, the Galician Symphony Orchestra, the Kammerorchester Basel, the Real Filharmonia de Galicia, the Orquesta Clássica de Espinho and the Young Eurasian Soloists Chamber Orchestra.

     

    In addition to his solo career, Iago is a member of the Athena Quartet and has collaborated with other prominent musicians such as Ivan Monighetti, Sol Gabetta, Kian Soltani, Mischa Maisky, Arto Noras and Frans Helmerson at international festivals in Russia, Portugal, Croatia, the Countries Netherlands and Switzerland.

     

    Iago has been selected to participate in several music academies and festivals, including the Academy of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival, the International Academy of Music in Liechtenstein and the Davos Festival, among others.
